The shishi is the mythical guardian lion that reached Japan along the Silk Road through Chinese temple art, driving off evil wherever it stands. On goshuin it often echoes a shrine's own lion tradition, like lion-dance festivals or Namba Yasaka's famous lion-head stage, and pairs naturally with peonies or its partner komainu.
